This planned community has a fine collection of housing stock. It was built and planned for the middle class early in the 1900s and beyond. I saw Gabe Pressman doing a piece on Jackson Heights. It was very upbeat, very favorable and concentrated on the incredible diversity of residents. He interviewed some students from PS69, who loved having lots of friends from other countries and cultures.
A far cry from the last piece I saw back in the 80s where Chris Borgan lableled us the cocaine capital of the country.
I just moved to Jackson Heights in September and agree with most of the points you’ve made in this posting. However, I must take exception with regard to the parking situation, specifically in and around the historic district. While I myself don’t own a car, visitors always comment on how hard it is to find a space on the street. (I’ve also been told that even the buildings with their own parking garages have waiting lists of several years for available spaces.) And certainly all these people driving around in search of a parking space does nothing to improve the traffic situation on 37th and Roosevelt Avenues!
Gabe Pressman that guy is still around! WOW I saw him back in the 60s covering a parade with the Robert Kennedy! I’ll take a look at the NBC website. Is that the station or CBS?
Jackson Heights has come a long way from the 80s! It getting more alive with people from over the world. People from all different walks of life with the values of having a fine neighborhood. A far cry from the cartell era! Thanks to all the hard work of the neighbors and friends of Jackson Heights who really care. Like you Deb…keeping the hood a great place to be! Happy Holidays.
Steven:
Parking is a problem in NYC. One needs to read a book called Tepper Isn’t Going Out. This will guide you to the magical state of “good parking karma”. Seriously, there are places to park if you write letters, have an agressive approach and pay the price. There are 2 Public parking lots 75 St & 37 Ave & 82 St & 37 Ave. The secret is to go further away from the commercial district. There is a science to parking in NYC.
